The candid shots really are the best because it’s real life and you adore your real life family. This session was busy with three little kiddos throwing rocks, crossing bridges, and climbing on fallen trees trunks. I love being able to capture it all – the adventure, curiosity, brotherly love and not so brotherly love, adoration for a melt-my-heart-adorable little sister, and the proof that a smile is contagious. A family of 2 became 3, and a family of 3 is becoming 4. When Adam surprised Tanna with a maternity lifestyle session on Mother’s Day last year, I remembering hoping it wouldn’t be the last time I took their photos. They are seriously the sweetest couple, and I just knew they would be amazing parents. I’m just thrilled I got to give myself a big fat “I told you so”. Adam and Tanna are the best parents, and the best news… they’re expecting again!
Their little one was the CUTEST. He even walked (with squeaker shoes… I die.) up to me mid session for a little hug. Well, that’s what I’m calling it. He might have been trying to push me away because I was messing up their trio. Let’s just call it a hug.
Says Tanna, “The photo of us kissing him and his little lips squished just kills me. I love it. I really was impressed you got some many great photos for how grumpy he was! His dad was thinking we’d have at least one crying photo! I bet sometimes you wish you could be sitting next to your clients to see them react to the adorable photos.”

It’s that squishy feel that I love the most when taking pictures of families. The closeness and touch and squishing yourselves all together because that’s how you live together, and sometimes it’s uncomfortable and you could really use a break but most times you just can’t get enough.

The weather’s got me reminiscing on this dreamy summer lifestyle session with the Doran family. Anna and John plus two kids plus two dogs in spaces, inside and out, they’ve created together. Some personal highlights are Anna and John’s matching flip-flops, legos galore, and a teenage girl kicking her younger brother out of her room. This was one of the most relaxed sessions I’ve ever done and more than once, I heard, “Well this is pretty typical.” THAT is why I love in-home lifestyle sessions. Sure, it’s great to remember the extraordinary times in our lives – a wedding, graduation, anniversary – but to me it’s the everyday moments and happenings that deserve a little more space in our hearts and minds.
